The "Dual-Oven Compatibility" of CPET Trays — How Materials Science Lets One Tray Handle Microwave and Oven

If a microwave baking tray could only be used in a microwave, its applications would be limited. The value of CPET (crystallized polyethylene terephthalate) trays lies in dual-oven compatibility: the same tray can go from the freezer directly into a microwave or a conventional oven without changing containers.

The materials science behind this compatibility lies in the degree of crystallinity of CPET. Ordinary PET (the kind used in water bottles) softens and deforms at high temperatures, whereas CPET controls the crystallization process so that polymer chains form ordered crystalline regions, significantly improving heat resistance. CPET trays typically operate within a temperature range of -40°C to +220°C, handling both frozen storage and high oven temperatures.

From a product design standpoint, dual-oven compatibility means the tray must simultaneously satisfy two contradictory conditions: being transparent to microwaves (letting them pass through the tray to reach the food), while being heat-resistant in an oven (withstanding conduction and convection heating). This is the exact opposite logic of susceptor trays — susceptor trays need to "absorb" microwaves, while CPET trays need to "let them through."

Another advantage of CPET is recyclability. Compared with expanded polystyrene or composite-material trays, crystallized PET can be identified and processed in recycling streams. For high-frequency use scenarios such as food service and airline catering, this is an increasingly important product attribute.
